The governor of Mississippi, Haley Barbour, recently met an old friend, Franklin D. Chu, the chief executive of Shanghai Century Acquisition, at Chu's Peak residence.

Barbour, a long-time supporter of free trade and former chairman of the Republican National Committee, was in town for meetings with Chinese government officials and local representatives.

Over a lavish dinner of Asian and continental dishes prepared by his hostess, Christine Chu, the American political heavyweight enjoyed himself among business notables and even appreciated the southern hospitality of a stiff Jack Daniel.

Among the guests were US Consul-General James Cunningham, Hang Lung chairman Ronnie Chan Chi-chung, Korean Consul Cho Whan-bok, Zhang Xuewu of China Travel Service, Goldman Sachs' vice-chair Tim Freshwater, AmCham president Jack Maisano and TVB's Steven Chan.
