Birger Christensen

Where? Birger Christensen is one of Scandinavia's swankiest shopping destinations. It can be found in the heart of Copenhagen.

Who? Finn Birger Christensen was the driving force behind the company until his death last year. Now his son Jens runs the family business.

The atmosphere: opened in 1869, this 20,000-square-foot store is a shoppers' paradise. The interior was designed by London-based Czech architect Eva Jiricna, who has also worked for Hugo Boss, Joseph and Joan & David. Decked out in black and white, the boutique features a combination of steel and glass to give it a modern Scandinavian look. The interior is simple, bright and airy.

The crowd: affluent and well-heeled shoppers, including Scandinavia's rich and famous. Birger Christensen also makes clothes for the Danish and Swedish royal courts.

The goods: the boutique features fashions by some of the world's leading designers, including Sonia Rykiel and Donna Karan. You can also purchase a selection of fur, cashmere or wool-blended coats. Birger Christensen also stocks hip international designer labels such as Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, Fendi, Giorgio Armani, Tod's and Marc Jacobs, plus top Danish brands. Inside you'll find freestanding Chanel and Hermes boutiques.

What's hot? Anything by Prada or Marc Jacobs.

Extras: shoes, bags, sunglasses, accessories and a men's store. Storage and alterations of both fur and fashion are offered in their workshop, and there is a Birger Christensen outlet at Copenhagen airport for last-minute shopping.

Birger Christensen is at Ostergrade 38, Copenhagen, tel: 45 33 11 55 55; www.birger-christensen.com.
