Uniformed 'security inspection' raises questions
About a dozen men in blue uniforms, claiming to be police officers, carried out security checks at Hong Kong Disneyland yesterday ahead of Vice-President Zeng Qinghong's attendance at the park's opening today.
The operation was carried out about noon, when thousands of guests, including senior officials and legislators, were still in the park. The men opened the man-hole covers and an electricity box at a lamp post in front of the stage facing Sleeping Beauty's Castle, and carefully inspected them before sealing the covers and the box. The operation lasted minutes and was carried out in the presence of Disney security officers.
It came days after it was revealed that food safety officers were asked by Disney staff to remove their badges and caps during an official inspection.
But police denied officers had been sent to carry out duties at the park. 'We had no officers working inside the park,' a spokeswoman said.
A Disney spokeswoman said issues relating to security could not be discussed, adding that the park would co-operate closely with the authorities.
