Fans of kung fu movie legend Bruce Lee have urged the government to help pay for a 2.7-metre bronze statue to mark his 65th birthday, but officials seem cool on the idea.
The plea comes as the Bruce Lee Club released the results of an internet poll which selected the pose for the statue to be unveiled on the Avenue of the Stars boardwalk on the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront on November 27.
Fans selected a pose taken from the 1972 classic, Fist of Fury, set in 1930s Shanghai and where Lee avenges the death of his teacher, which was ordered by the head of a Japanese martial arts school.
Club chairman Wong Yiu-keung said the poll was a success, with 57,200 votes cast in a month-long poll that ended on August 23.
'We believe this statue is not only a great way to remember Bruce Lee, but will become a popular tourist attraction with fans from around the world,' he said.
The club has asked mainland sculptor, Professor Cao Chongen, to shape the statue of the Hong Kong movie industry legend.
