Makeup artists stop covering up

Makeup people are no longer hiding behind the scenes thanks to artists such as Zing (pictured). The Singaporean has been exploring the full creative potential of cosmetics since his arrival here about 10 years ago. Now he's pushing the envelope even further with his new book Zing By Zing. It features 34 images of faces such as Gong Li, Shu Qi, Carina Lau Ka-ling, and Danielle Graham transformed into absolutely indescribable images.

'I want to push makeup people closer to the level of an artist,' Zing says. 'I think it is happening. You see more and more people interested in people working in the background of fashion and cosmetic companies signing them.'

Zing was one of the first, with Max Factor signing him up for advertisements.

He says his new book was a long time coming. 'It was 1999 when I first had the idea, but I've just been taking it really slow. It wasn't until last year when I started a weekly column in another magazine that the idea picked up again.'

An exhibition of these pictures starts tonight at Lee Gardens, Causeway Bay, and continues until next Friday. As for Zing By Zing, buy a copy because proceeds from its sale will be sent to the Hong Kong Cancer Fund.
