Influenza outbreak strikes children's ward

An influenza outbreak has affected at least six children at the developmental disabilities ward of Caritas Medical Centre in Cheung Sha Wan. Two boys and four girls, aged seven to 15, had fever and symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections since last Saturday. Tests found all six had the influenza virus. The children were transferred to an isolation ward, where their condition was stable last night. The centre's infection control team reported the cases to the Hospital Authority and the Centre for Health Protection, and all other child residents have been placed under close surveillance for signs of infection.

Cash box makes a Break for it

A cash box was retrieved after it fell from a moving armoured van in Lai Chi Kok. The box fell out when the door of the vehicle's rear compartment broke open in Broadway, Mei Foo Sun Chuen, about 1pm. Police would not say how much money was in the box. Realising what had happened, security guards in the van stopped about 50 metres from the box and retrieved it.

tunnel extends special deal for trucks, taxis

The Eastern Harbour Tunnel is extending its toll promotion programme for commercial vehicles, which is due to expire on September 30, to the end of the year. Goods vehicles with more than two axles will still be charged $10 for each extra axle, a reduction of $15 per axle, and empty taxis paying at the manual tollbooths will continue paying only $15 a trip, instead of $25 as originally set.

Sixth day of searching fails to find constable

The search for missing constable Ting Li-wah, 45, went into its sixth day, with more than 100 rescue workers failing to turn up any new clues. The search involving firefighters and mountain rescue officers from the Civil Aid Service resumed at 8am after being suspended at 7pm on Thursday.
