Hot fashion venue bursts at the seams
The scariest trend of this autumn's fashion season? Using Lan Kwai Fong's Volar (right) for shows. So far, Marc Jacobs, Wrangler and, this week, Jean Paul Gaultier have held events there and each time it felt like entering a packed can of smoking and drinking sardines.
The velvet-roped club might be a cache for celebrity and exclusivity, but the narrow interior and low-ceilings are just not very practical. Unless you're one of the VIPs in the front row, anyone farther back is lucky to see more than a model's neck.
A Gaultier rep told us they visited many Central bars and checked their capacity. 'But not many are large enough,' she said. 'We also found [Volar's] atmosphere matched with our style of Glam Rock.' Vibe is a good thing, but so is breathing space.
Don't get me wrong, Volar is a cool club for private parties and people watching, but cram it full with 400 people to look at clothes? Wrong size, wrong fit.
