Ma On Shan Rail passengers will be offered a special short-term fare concession on the KCRC monthly pass allowing commuters free transfer rides on the East Rail to Kowloon from December 1.

In a move to boost passenger flow, Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation chairman Michael Tien Puk-sun planned to reduce the price of the monthly pass to about $200 from $380 and $300 for regular purchasers.

Mr Tien said there was a demand for the alternative monthly pass, but there would not be much point in pricing it at about $270 if the public wanted it cheaper.

Passengers must start or end their journey on one of the Ma On Shan line's stations to enjoy free rides on East Rail, which do not include the Lowu and Race Concourse stations.

As to suggestions East Rail users may alight at a station on the extension line before re-entering to receive the concession, Mr Tien said he would review the situation when the promotion ends in June.

The Ma On Shan line handles about 100,000 passengers a day, far below the 190,000 target.

The corporation also plans to install outdoor half-height platform screen doors along the East Rail line.
