Healing heritage handed down the centuries
What are shamans - and what do they do?
Fox says that shamans work with what's called a patient's luminous energy field. 'This orb of living light that surrounds the body contains the subtle bodies and the blueprint for our physical body,' she says.
'It also retains the memories of trauma, disease and violence, which appear as imprints in the luminous energy field. The shaman tracks these imprints and releases them from the field.'
Depending on how sensitive they are to energy, patients may feel the energy shifting, others a deep sense of relaxation or vibrations, or have visual memories that give insight into the source of their imbalance, she says.
Shamanism is said to be at least 8,000 years old, with its origins most likely in Siberia. A core belief of shamanism is that there are two worlds: the material and the spiritual.
