A FUND has been set up in memory of veteran China journalist David Schweisberg, the former Beijing Bureau chief of United Press International.

Mr Schweisberg, 39, died last Thursday in Beijing after suffering chest pains following a squash session.

Due to a doctor's warning that smoking, drinking and late nights was taking a toll on his health, he had resolved to get in shape.

A memorial gathering is to be held today in Beijing and a funeral service will be held later in New York.

The David Schweisberg Memorial Fund will help finance training for Chinese journalists at the prestigious East-West Centre in Hawaii.

A doyen of the foreign press corps by day, Mr Schweisberg was also a founding member of the Back Door band and has jammed with Chinese rockers such as Cui Jian and the all-girl Cobra band.

Contributions to the fund can be made through the Foreign Correspondents' Club.
