Celebrities race for a good cause

DRIVEN not by hardcore motors but by a heart for charity, singers Jacky Cheung, Leon Lai, Vivian Chow and Sally Yeh joined celebrities from the entertainment and business world in a novel race day held recently.

''Charity on Wheels'' was a colourful fund-raising day jointly organised by TVB and the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Zhuhai Superhighway Co.

Originally a celebration for the partial opening of the first 122 kilometres of the six-lane superhighway connecting Hong Kong to China, it was turned into a project to raise money for seven charities in the mainland and Hong Kong.

The half-day event took place at the Huangtian interchange of the superhighway, where 100 sponsored competitors teamed up to race the 400-metre ''track''.

The 10-member teams started off in high spirits. Andy Lau and Anthony Lun raced for the Bank of China team, facing Jacky Cheung, Tony Leung and Wen Pik-ha from the Yan Chai Hospital team.

Leon Lai, Sandy Lam and Fayne Wong joined the Hopewell Group while Veronica Yip stood as the only entertainment personality for the all-Japanese Japanese Inc.

Aaron Kwok, who teamed with Shirley Kwan for Shun Tak Holdings, seemed to find special support from uncommon fans - the People's Liberation Army's naval officers - who overwhelmed him for photographs.
