Against hanging

YOUR editorial ''A question of life and death'' (Sunday Morning Post, October 3), said a girl faced death by hanging for smuggling heroin into Singapore.

Life is the most valuable thing in the world. The death penalty is the worst way to punish people.

Everyone will do wrong things, even a sage.

Knowing and correcting the faults is the most important thing.

In Poon Yuen-chung's case, she has broken the law of Singapore and should be legally responsible for her action, no matter whether her crime was committed out of stupidity or not.

However, is hanging her the best and most suitable punishment? Certainly not.

She was 18 at the time and too young to receive the death sentence.

A chance for her to correct her faults is very important. Moreover, her crime may be stupidity. It is a pity to hang her.

Therefore, send her to prison and provide her with correctional services. It is much more suitable.
