Seeing red

WHY are beach guards so lazy? To reduce their work load a clever trick has been adopted: the beach guards put up the red flag at each and every opportunity, even when this red flag is totally inappropriate.

On Sunday at 3pm on Big Wave Bay, the red flag was up, yet the waves were only about six inches high. There was not even the usual floating rubbish to endanger life. Can Urban Services, or whoever is supposedly ''managing'' these guards, ensure the public get some value for money with this expensive service? Furthermore, will Urban Services curtail this bad habit of unnecessary use of the red flag so that important danger signs are not devalued by deliberate overuse? W. A. T. CRAWLEY Sha Tin
