Man held after agreeing to beat his girlfriend
Police yesterday arrested the live-in boyfriend of a City University student for assault after he allegedly agreed to her request to beat her as punishment for dating another man. The alleged beating took place at the weekend after the 19-year-old girl had an argument with her 23-year-old boyfriend about her date, at his public housing flat in Yue Tin House, Pak Tin Estate, Shekkipmei. She had also shaved an eyebrow and cut her hair to punish herself, besides asking him to beat her, according to police.
Yesterday, she had another dispute with him. She then called his 50-year-old mother warning her he might try to commit suicide. The mother alerted police, who arrested the man in his flat and took the girl to Caritas Medical Centre for treatment of facial wounds. The man was questioned last night but no charge was laid.
Unemployed man accused of robbing prostitutes
Kwai Sze-ho, 27, unemployed, of Tsuen Wan, appeared in Kowloon City Court on five counts of robbery from January 14 to 17 involving five prostitutes who worked at Yau Ma Tei and Tsim Sha Tsui. He was also charged with loitering and possession of a cutter after being arrested near Champagne Court on Kimberley Street on February 6. The prosecution alleged Kwai deliberately targeted prostitutes. He was remanded in jail custody until March 22.
puppies found at alleged Dog meat factory
Police rescued eight puppies, a rabbit and a bird from a hut alleged to be an illegal dog meat factory on a hillside opposite Hang Yee House, Cheung Hang Estate, Tsing Yi, at about 11am. No one was inside at the time. The raid was prompted by a Chinese-language newspaper report. The animals have been given to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department.
Heart drug warning
The Department of Health is investigating a US safety alert on the heart drug Trasylol. The US Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday warned that Trasylol could increase the risk of heart failure, kidney failure and stroke. A department spokesman said the drug was available in the city.

One ticket won the $8,880,525 first prize last night. The numbers were 3, 6, 13, 29, 39 and 49. The extra number was 9. Thirty-five tickets each won second prize of $33,545. Third prize paid $16,770.
