Public underwhelmed by relief

More than half the public believe the tax relief provided by the finance minister is inadequate, a university survey has shown.

Only 37 per cent of 643 respondents said the concessions were adequate, compared to 53 per cent who said the opposite.

Fifty per cent were satisfied overall with the budget, up two percentage points from an instant poll on the budget last year.

But dissatisfaction reached 19 per cent, up from last year's 11 per cent, according to the Public Opinion Programme of the University of Hong Kong.

People who considered the tax system to be unfair also increased, from 27 per cent to 34 per cent, during the period.
