Lend a helping hand to the community

I volunteered to visit elderly people in Lower Shek Kip Mei Estate recently. It was the first time I had done charity work. The aim of the activity was to provide companionship for elderly people who lived alone.

Most of the elderly people lived in small, dark rooms like pigeon holes. They were poor and some of them were ill, but they shared their experiences with us and asked us to visit them again.

It was a meaningful experience for me. I had never come into contact with poor and lonely elderly people before. I felt sympathy for them and I learned to treasure the things I have.

Thanks for your letter, Heidi. Helping out in the community is a great thing to do. If you would like to do more voluntary work, I suggest you read our Get Involved column, which runs on Wednesdays in the Young Post.

Our reporter Lau Kit-wai profiles a charity each week, highlighting what they do as well as the kind of voluntary work students can do to help out.

To read the full list of charities that we have covered in Get Involved, go to www.yp.scmp.com and look in the Young Post archive.
