Wong extols virtues of HK?s digital entertainment industry

Updated at 7.13pm: Hong Kong?s sophisticated digital entertainment industry would soon be able to benefit from growing opportunities offered by China?s market, predicted Secretary for Commerce, Industry and Technology Joseph Wong Wing-ping.

Mr Wong was speaking at the opening ceremony of the Multimedia Innovation Centre Entrepreneurial Research, Education and Creativity Laboratory (MERECL) on Wednesday.

He said Hong Kong had an excellent telecommunications infrastructure and an innovative workforce. This allowed the city to take advantage of economic opportunities offered by the fast-evolving digital entertainment market.

?We have a sizeable force of creative and tech-savvy digital entertainment talents that receive international recognition,? Mr Wong said.

?Our strong foundations in the production of film, television and pop music have enabled us to lead the region in the creation of innovative and high-quality digital entertainment content,? he explained.

Mr Wong said the opening up of the mainland market provided more business opportunities for Hong Kong?s digital entertainment industry.

?Given our cultural and language affinity with the mainland and the international outlook of our talents, our firms are uniquely positioned to bring together and collaborate with both foreign and mainland companies to serve the booming mainland market,? he said.

Mr Wong said the government would continue to create a favourable business environment to help develop the digital entertainment industry.
