Where? This shoe haven is located in Seattle's Capitol Hill area, home to an eclectic mix of historic mansions, parks, funky shops and galleries. Capitol 1524 carries the latest selection of hip and funky trainers.
Who? Owners Mark Shin, Joe Nguyen and Glenn Aure have been collecting trainers for almost 20 years. They opened the store in 2003 because they felt there was a gap in the local market for cool, limited-edition trainers.
Fashion finds: the store carries only merchandise the owners feel is trendy. Expect to find limited-edition lines from brands such as Nike, Adidas, Reebok, New Balance, Feit, Callous, Vans and Onitsuka Tigers by Asics. You can also browse through streetwear lines such as Stussy, F****** Awesome, Lemar and Dauley, UXA, Nike White Label and New Era. Headwear is also available.
The vibe: low-key. Hip-hop music plays in the background and the salespeople are young and knowledgeable. The store has a cool display of shoe-related paraphernalia and Nike posters, plus a showcase of limited-edition styles.
The crowd: trainer addicts and those looking for something different. Music industry celebrities such as Pharrell Williams, DJ Jazzy Jeff, The Roots, Kelis and Pearl Jam also frequent the store.
Extras: the store has a barbershop for those who want a quick haircut. Customers can also flip through international magazines devoted to trainers, including Street Jack, Complex and Boon.
