A hip hop experience

Caryn Yap

Hong Kong experienced something akin to a hip hop block party on Saturday afternoon as a group of three MCs and one DJ took it live guerilla-style in Causeway Bay.

Hitting the patio of urban clothing store CAS around 5pm were MC Gold Mountain, also known as Kevin Chau Kei-chien, along with MC Vandal, Nick Dynamo, plus DJ JP booming beats for an impromptu set organised by Chow's Hierophat crew.

Obviously, freestyling and beatboxing are not something busy local shoppers usually expect. But within 15 minutes, pedestrian traffic came to a virtual standstill. The police also came by after a noise complaint, but the hour-long performance was allowed to continue.

As one amused senior citizen remarked: 'It's refreshing and a real eye-opener. It's good public entertainment and they should do more things like this.'

Later, when breakdancers emerged below, it was - as the kids say - off the hook! Chow remarked afterwards: 'This is the true spirit of hip hop - the unity and love of positive collaboration between artists.'
