Service industries report rise in business receipts

Updated at 6.14pm: Business receipts in Hong Kong's service industries rose in value in 2005 compared with a year earlier, latest figures released on Tuesday showed.

A spokesman for the Census and Statistics Department revealed that the hotel industry saw its receipts rise by 21.9 per cent in 2005. This was the largest increase recorded among all sectors during the period.

He said the increase was because of a 'sustained growth in inbound tourism' in the year.

Transport reported a 17.6 per cent rise in the value of business receipts, followed by real estate, which saw a 15.8 per cent increase, and insurance, which recorded a 15.7 per cent rise.

Other sectors that reported growth in business receipts included: financing (up 14.3 per cent), banking (up 10.9 per cent), import and export trade (up 10.5 per cent) and storage (up 10.3 per cent).

The spokesman also said output in all service industries, except real estate, increased in the fourth quarter of 2005 compared with the same period in 2004.

Increases during this period were recorded in hotels (up 22.7 per cent), insurance (up 19.9 per cent), financing (up 18.7 per cent), transport (up 14.9 per cent), storage (up 12.5 per cent) and import and export trade (up 10.4 per cent).
