Mind How You Go

This disc is typical of Skye Edwards, the voice of Morcheeba.

Ever humble, she says of her   reason for striking out on her own: 'Other members of the band started talking about taking a long sabbatical. I thought, 'What am I going to do?''

What she did is record Mind  How You Go, a collection of elegant narrative-laden songs that evoke images and moods.

Calling stirs up feelings  that  are almost too private for public consumption. Which is why it's no surprise that it was written on her honeymoon and in collaboration  with husband Steve Gordon, who  plays bass and shares co-writing credits elsewhere on the album.

Another intimate musical account among the 11 strong offerings is  Tell Me About Your Day, which borrows from Joni Mitchell's Hejira  in  its lack of formal structure. The lyrics are unconventional too, being less like song lines and more like disjointed thoughts framed within  a postcard.

Different in flavour, partly because of  its a cappella style, is Jamaica Days. Soulful, with a tropical scent, it's about  Edwards' grandmother, who lives in Kingston and who she met recently  for the first time. It's the only track on which  Edwards worked with Canadian  producer Daniel Lanois (U2, Bob Dylan, Peter Gabriel), which may explain why it's in a class of its own.

Although Morcheeba fans may find it difficult to dance to Mind How You Go, they should still take to  Edwards' trippy, down-tempo mixture.

Most potent in the chill-out  cocktail is her glorious voice, the  vocal equivalent of liquid nougat.
