The Little Willies

(Milking Bull)

You've just got home from a hard day at work and want to unwind. Something mellow, laid-back and a little rocky would be nice. Slip this one on. A little jazz, a lot of country, a touch of blues. That's nice. But wait - that female vocalist - isn't that Norah Jones?

Indeed it is, with her four musician buddies who got together three years ago in a New York bar so they could spend a little time together. They got such a buzz that they've been meeting on a regular basis and have now put their spontaneity down on CD for the rest of us to chill to.

This isn't the Jones of Grammy-winning fame, although there was a hint of it on her multi-platinum-selling albums. On these 13 tracks, nine of them covers, she reveals that all that jazz-pop was just a way to make a lot of money - she's really just a country gal at heart.

That doesn't mean the current darlings of country music are in danger of being bumped off their broncos. This isn't an outing that will burn the barn down. Nonetheless, it's a well-produced set of Americana written by the likes of Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson and Townes Van Zandt, among others, performed with down-home honesty.

Jones may be a superstar, but she doesn't hog the limelight (New York singer-songwriter Richard Julian gets as much prominence). Throughout, though, there's enough of her vocals and piano for diehard fans.

This may not be another multi-million seller, but it's a guaranteed repeat player.
