Colts to show off skills at showpiece

A new under-18 category will be included in the annual Island versus Peninsula age-group matches to be played as curtain raisers to the main Rugby Sevens programme.

The colts (under-14, u-16, u-18 and u-19) will show off their skills before the start of the main tournament on Saturday and Sunday at Hong Kong Stadium.

'These matches are a highlight for local colts rugby, and there is a fair amount of friendly rivalry involved,' said Sanjay Lalwani, in charge of the mini-rugby and colts matches.

Players are selected based on where they live.

'The players must go through a selection process and many will end up playing against friends from their club teams or schools. Most of them know each other well. They all fight hard to win, and the matches are enjoyable spectacles.'

The women's u-19 sides will be the first to clash at 9.50am on Saturday morning. Next up are the u-14 boys at 10.05am. On Sunday morning, the u-16 boys play first at 8.50am, then it's the u-18s at 9.05am, with the u-19s wrapping up the series at 9.20am.

Lalwani said: 'As the kick-off for the men's tournament draws nearer, the stadium fills up, and the gathering fans cheer for the colts. It's exciting for the players.'
