Great Artists 2 With Tim Marlow

ATV World

James Whistler was the first great American artist who became well-known around the world.

Well-travelled, he was a painter and printmaker who bridged the gap between Impressionist Paris and symbolist London.

He was an intelligent and original artist who said that art - rather than documenting the visual world around us - should be experienced for its own sake.

Whistler's Arrangement in Grey and Black, a portrait of his mother, is one of the greatest artistic creations, not least because of its elusive title.

His Nocturne Black and Gold was thought to be so radical that Whistler had to go to court to defend it.

National Geographic: Mysteries of the Tornado

ATV World

Most of us would run from a deadly tornado. Tim Samaras has dedicated his life to chasing them down, and this year he's armed with two cutting-edge probes that will provide a whole new picture of what's happening inside a twister.

The first is designed to measure wind speed and air temperature in the heart of a tornado, and the second contains a camera, GPS transmitter and temperature and wind speed indicators.

Samaras will rig these to rise into the heart of a tornado. The information he gets from these probes will help him understand what is happening in the most destructive parts of a tornado. What is the wind speed? What is the temperature?

So What Do You Do All Day?

ATV World

Lynne Franks is the public relations guru many believe to be the inspiration for Edina in the hit television comedy Absolutely Fabulous.

However, she has renounced the showbiz set in favour of meditation and a New Age lifestyle which she is promoting through self-help books.

But when cameras spend a day in her company, her new-found serenity is sorely tested when one of her valuable plates is broken.

Fashion was Lynne's speciality. But making millions came at a price. Completely burnt out, with a failed marriage behind her, she got out and has spent the last few years travelling, lecturing, helping womankind and finding herself.

Lynne was born Jewish and became a Buddhist - just like Edina in Absolutely Fabulous. She is now committed to a bewildering range of beliefs.

The Monkey Hunters

TVB Pearl

Lions rarely hunt baboons. These large monkeys are armed with dangerous teeth, they are hard to catch and usually not worth the risk or effort. But there is one place in Africa's Great Rift Valley where baboons are plentiful and lions have learned to catch them.

Lions are known to hunt buffalo, zebra or wildebeest, but when they are not available, these big cats must turn to other prey.

The river in Tarangire National Park in Tanzania never runs dry. During the dry season, herds of animals come to the river to drink. It is a time of plenty for predators but when it rains on the surrounding plains, the herds abandon Tarangire.

Then the predators have only the resident animals to hunt. Baboons are not only resident, they occur in large troops. Desperation forces the lions to target unusual prey.
