Israeli found drowned off Shek O beach

Shek O

The body of an Israeli man who went missing on Saturday while kayaking off Shek O was found yesterday after an overnight air-and-sea search.

The victim, 30, was reported missing at 6.30pm on Saturday. He had been kayaking with a 33-year-old French national off Shek O beach, near Ng Fan Chau.

The Frenchman was rescued on Saturday with minor injuries but his friend was believed to have been swept out to sea, police said.

The search went on all night until the body was discovered at 7.20am. He was identified later by his friend. The victim, surnamed Elad, held a Hong Kong Identity Card, according to police.

Hong Kong and Kowloon Lifeguards Union vice-chairman Alex Kwok Siu-kit warned that high waves at Shek O made the area dangerous for water activities.

'Also, it is better not to do such activities in late afternoon when it is getting dark,' Mr Kwok said.

A week ago, a 15-year-old boy drowned at Clear Water Bay First Beach in Sai Kung.

Chung Kai-man, a student at a Wong Tai Sin school, went for a swim with a friend on March 26, after 5pm when the lifeguard service at the beach ends.

He was found unconscious about an hour later 100 metres from the shore.
