Police investigate discovery of human arms at landfill

Two cooked human arms, believed to be those of a child, have been found at a landfill site in Lanzhou, Gansu province , just a week after 121 human skulls were discovered in the province.

According to the Lanzhou Morning Post, staff at Chengguan district's Yangwagou landfill found the parts along with other remains in a white plastic bag on Monday morning.

Lanzhou Morning Post reporter Tang Yuanzhi said they appeared to have been mixed with cooking ingredients, including ginger and chilli.

'The arms clearly belonged to a child and had the upper arm and forearm, and the hands with nails,' Tang said.

Lanzhou Public Security Bureau News Office director Peng Hailin confirmed the discovery. He said it would take police some time to determine whether the remains were those of a child. The Lanzhou Morning Post reported that police at the scene had estimated the victim's age at between five and eight.

About 5 tonnes of garbage were dumped at the landfill on Sunday. The site mainly accepts medical and household waste from the Donggang and Yantan areas, and Heping township in Yizhong county.

The landfill find follows the discovery last Monday of the 121 human skulls on a remote river bank in Gansu's Tianzhu county.

However, Gansu is not the only region coping with grisly finds.

In the Heilongjiang city of Jiamusi , police last month arrested a suspected serial killer alleged to have raped, killed and dismembered at least six children.

Reports said bodies found at the suspect's home were barely recognisable.

Sources said mainland authorities, including the Communist Party's Publicity Department and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, had yesterday ordered a stop to all further reporting on the cases.

In 2003, the Guangdong Provincial Public Security Bureau was forced to publicly counter overseas reports that some Guangdong restaurants cooked dead babies in soups and sold the food to Taiwanese businessmen.

Police said the reports had been fabricated to damage the image of Guangdong and the mainland.
