Ancient dinosaur eggs leave exhibition visitor fooled
Fossilised dinosaur eggs on show in Olympic City had at least one visitor fooled yesterday. She thought the eggs were fakes when in fact they were the genuine article.
The two eggs, from the Zigong Dinosaur Museum in Sichuan province , are part of a display of 25 rare eggs, including 15 birds' eggs from Beijing Museum of Natural History and others from museums around the world.
Shopper Yuen Kit-ying, who initially paid little attention to the dinosaur eggs because she thought they were fakes, was delighted to find they were genuine. 'It is amazing. I saw some dinosaur eggs in books before, but this is the first time I have seen the real thing,' said Ms Yuen, visiting Olympic City with her 22-month-old son.
One of the dinosaur eggs dates back to the late Cretaceous age about 65 million years ago and appears like a traditional chocolate Easter egg, which appealed to Tsui Heung-yuk and her 19-month-old daughter. Compared with the round dinosaur eggs, the birds' eggs from Beijing are smaller and smoother. Three emu eggs from Australia fall between the two in size.
'All the mainland birds' eggs, including the oldest, which is more than 80 years old, were collected in the wild by our scientists,' said Sun Dong-jun from the Beijing Museum of Natural History who escorted all the birds' eggs to Hong Kong last month.
Irene Kit Lin-so, general manager of Sino Estates Management who arranged the exhibition, said they wanted to present an Easter display with special eggs rather than chocolate ones.
