Huangpu is a district of pigeon fanciers and the skies over Shanghai have seen birds racing back to their coops for the best part of a century. Words and pictures by Jonathan Browning.
Are you suffering from Saturday Night Fever?
If so, then the Hong Kong Youth Arts Foundation wants you. Founder Lindsey McAllister (below) is planning to stage a grand musical this November called Disco Inferno and she's looking for young and energetic dancers, singers, actors, between the ages of 12 to 25, ready to burn, baby, burn. Experience is preferred but enthusiasm is a must.
According to McAllister, the story will be a Faustian tale about a young dancer who sells his soul for dance-floor success only to lose his sweetheart.
Audition details and registration can be found at the group's website (www.hkyaf.com). As McAllister exhorts: 'If you are fanatic about flares and adore afros, come and bump your rump.' How positively polyester is that?
The deadline for online applications is April 28, while the auditions will be held on May 6 at the Quarry Bay School in Braemar Hill. For more information, call 2877 2656.
