It doesn't have to involve Mounties, beavers or ice hockey, but the Canadian Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a short story competition. The first annual Maple Leaf Short Story Competition is open to all residents of Hong Kong over the age of 12. The theme is 'At Home Away', which can be interpreted in any way. Winning entries will be published in the Asia Literary Review and have a chance of being included in an anthology. The authors will receive personal consultations with Chameleon Press, in addition to book coupons and cash prizes up to $2,000. The contest is divided into a junior (under 18) and senior division and there's a $50 entry fee. Stories should be between 1,000 and 2,000 words and the deadline is May 1. The chamber's telephone number is 2110 8700.

Continuing the literary theme, the Asia Pacific Writers Network is making its own call for submissions for their November issue, guest edited by writer Xu Xi (below). They're looking to publish 20 creative writers on the subject of 'the shrinking 50 years'. They're looking for any creative writing, from stories and poems to essays. The deadline is August 31.
