Freddy the tomcat, kicked out by his owners after taking home a dead bird amid the bird flu scare, has been given not only a new name, but also a home.

Freddy now has to learn his Chinese name, Foon Sum, which means a forgiving heart.

'I planned to adopt this cat ever since I read about it in the newspaper,' his new owner Tse Li-ming said yesterday.

Even though Foon Sum has to share a 300 sq ft flat in Sha Tin with other two cats instead of roaming a luxurious house and a big garden as in the past, Ms Tse believed he would live a happy and healthy life with the family.

'When I brought Foon Sum home on Good Friday, I knew what he needed was care and security. So I slept with him on the floor for the whole night to show my care for him,' Ms Tse said.

Foon Sum's former owner gave him to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals two months ago.
