How they got where they are today

Richard Sun Po-yuen

PricewaterhouseCoopers head of Capital Market Services Group

MY OFFICE DOOR is always open, literally. I believe that to successfully manage and work with a team one must be accessible to people for as much time as possible.

Of course, like the majority of people in my line of work, I am usually very busy but it is still important to find the time to listen to the thoughts, ideas and concerns of others. How else would I keep in touch with the personal aspect of the business?

My style of management focuses on professional and personal development. It makes me very happy when I see my colleagues realising their potential and achieving their goals. I know these expressions are often overused, but I believe we have established systems in the company that help people make real progress in their careers.

I also encourage younger members of the team to talk to other partners and senior colleagues to gain from their experience. Through this process, all sorts of new things can be learnt which do not necessarily connect to the business but add up to a better understanding of life.

There is no doubt that those entering the profession must be prepared to devote a great deal of time studying for various professional examinations. Again, I see myself playing a supporting role to help newcomers and the less experienced accountants make their way in the profession.

Some people may think that the accountancy and auditing profession is dull, but nothing could be further from the truth. I encourage my colleagues to look beyond the numbers and take a keen interest in the companies they are working with.

I tell them the better you get to know your clients on a professional basis, the better you can help them and the more you will enjoy the job. These are some tips that have served me well over the years and I would like to pass them on to the next generation.

Accountancy is a career in which accuracy is of utmost importance. With tight deadlines and new standards to meet, there is always more hard work to be put in.

Successful accountants need to possess a special aptitude for numbers and pay close attention to detail. To ensure that younger members of the team stay focused, senior partners have to provide the right levels of support and encouragement.

One area that has become increasingly important in recent years is work-life balance and I actively take the necessary steps to tackle this issue. Hard work, long hours and high rewards have been the trademark of the profession, but people have to find the right balance between work, family and social life.

It is part of my job as a long-time professional and senior partner with the company to remind and help those I work with to seek the right balance. However, I don't mind working long hours because I love my job.
