Gambling addicts wouldn't be caught dead reading a book or saying the word 'book' because in Cantonese, su sounds exactly like 'lose'.

Not the case for Macau casino king Stanley Ho Hung-sun, however, who has no time for such superstition.

At a ceremony this week to mark his $15 million donation to the Open University, Dr Ho, a man who loves to laugh at his own jokes, prefaced every sound-bite with the word su.

Why did you donate so much to the university?

'Because I love reading BOOKS and value education. I love universities because they smell of BOOKS.'

What is the secret of your success?

'I never admit to LOSING.'

What's the one piece of advice you would give to young people?

'Wealth comes and goes. Only the knowledge that you gain from your studies and from reading BOOKS stays with you for life.'

Now that's deep.
