Lunar Park

Lunar Park

by Bret Easton

Ellis Picador, $90

Patrick Bateman returns in Lunar Park, a compelling novel that pits Bret Easton Ellis against the monster of his own creation in American Psycho. This time, however, it's not the brand-conscious serial killer doing the rounds but a reader so obsessed by the fictional character and its maker that he becomes the stalker of all our nightmares. That includes Ellis, the protagonist in this narrative that begins with him recounting his life as a founding member of the literary Brat Pack - young writers and editors, he says, who were 'all fake flash and punk and menace'. When Ellis' lifestyle of drugs and alcohol takes its toll - and, after the death of his abusive father - he returns to (fictional) actress Jayne Dennis, the mother of his child. But the dark past soon slips in. Ellis is menaced by, among others, a Bateman lookalike and his dead father. Readers who couldn't stomach American Psycho or found little relevance in Less Than Zero, might consider reading Lunar Park. Despite several negative reviews, this novel should underscore why Ellis remains such a big deal.
