Wait on tables

Want to try your luck at getting a table at the French Laundry or El Bulli? You'll need luck and persistence.

For the French Laundry, start calling on the dot at 10am (Pacific Standard Time) and be prepared to keep hitting the redial button. The restaurant's Kristine Keefer says 'a few tables' are available online at www.opentable.com. If you don't manage to get a table there or at Per Se in New York (which is just as busy), try one of the Bouchon restaurants. Go to www.frenchlaundry.com for contact details.

Luis Garcia says a rumour that El Bulli will be closed next year isn't true, although he doesn't rule out closing for an entire year in the future. If you don't have a table this year, try for next year - or consider the El Bulli hotel in Seville, Hacienda Benazuza, where the restaurant La Alqueria serves dishes from the past 20 El Bulli seasons. Go to www.elbulli.com for contact details.

Reservations are sometimes sold on ebay, as was the case in April, when a table for up to four was snapped up for Euro100 ($990).
