Value of exports continues to rise

The value of exports of electrical and electronic products and wearing apparel recorded significant year-on-year increases in the three months ended March, figures released on Thursday showed.

The Census and Statistics Department figures showed that exports of consumer electrical and electronic products increased by $3 billion, or 89.8 per cent, to $6.4 million in the first quarter of 2006 over a year earlier.

The value of wearing apparel exports grew by $2.8 billion, or 68.5 per cent, to $6.9 billion. Those of textiles rose 64.5 per cent to $7.5 billion.

The machinery, equipment, apparatus, parts and components industry recorded a 1.5 per cent growth. The value of its exports rose by $0.1 billion to $4.2 billion.

Exports of chemicals and chemical products also increased 18.8 per cent to $2.0 billion during the period, the figures showed.

The department figures also showed wearing apparel, electrical and electronic products, textiles, as well as machinery and its related industry accounted for 76 per cent of Hong Kong's total domestic exports in March.
