HK to host international broadcasting seminar

Overseas experts will attend a public service broadcasting conference in Hong Kong on June 21. Officials said the senior executives from Australia, Japan, Germany, Britain and the United States would also meet local broadcasters, academics and media professionals during panel discussions before the conference.

In Beijing, Secretary for Commerce, Industry and Technology, Joseph Wong Wing-ping, said he would adopt a passive approach in dealing with issues concerning RTHK, adding that he would handle only those that needed to be addressed.

Hong Kong-born Ivy League student Richard Ng, 22, who was taking an engineering degree at Columbia University, has been found dead in New York's East River, after disappearing shortly after an exam on May 7. Ng had reportedly searched for directions to the Brooklyn Bridge before leaving his dormitory on campus.

surveillance law staff costs to top $18m a year

The government said under its covert surveillance law proposals it would cost about $18.7 million a year to hire judges and judiciary staff, including a monitoring commission. Two High Court judges and three support staff would be needed to meet demand if the proposed laws were accepted, it said. A secretariat consisting of a principal executive officer and 16 staff would also have to be set up, according to a government submission to Legco.
