Free skating scheme to be expanded

Vision on Ice, a popular free ice-skating programme for schools, will enter its second year at Festival Walk and City Plaza.

The 2006-2007 programme will be expanded to include kindergarten, primary and secondary school students.

Participants will be able to learn ice-skating from experienced, professional coaches as part of a school-based physical education lesson or as an extra-curricular activity.

Last year, more than 2,000 students from 28 secondary schools tried out the sport.

'The programme was very well received last year,' said Swire Properties skating services manager, Marlo Gonzalez.

'Most of the teachers and students from participating schools found it inspiring and we had substantial referrals through word-of-mouth.

'We are extending the programme to invite about 2,000 schools by including kindergartens and primary and secondary schools.'

The sessions consist of a 30-minute class at the rink, where students learn the basics of ice-skating through demonstrations by coaches, and another 30-minute practice session.
