Customs officers uncover boat's illegal secret

Contraband haul . . the Customs and Excise Department hopes to confiscate a Chinese fishing vessel believed to have been used for smuggling $550,000 worth of contraband cigarettes. Officers found a secret compartment, thought to have been used to conceal 500,000 cigarettes with a duty potential of $290,000, after spotting the vessel in Chai Wan typhoon shelter without lights on Monday. Officers revealed the one-metre by four-metre hide could also be used to conceal electrical appliances, firearms or even illegal immigrants.
