Malaysian jailed for possessing forged immigration stamps
Updated at 6.47pm: A Malaysian visitor to Hong Kong was sentenced to 15 months' in jail on Tuesday for possessing forged immigration stamp dies.
The 26-year-old man, Chong Yong Nam, pleaded guilty at the Sha Tin Magistrates' Court on Tuesday to a count of possessing false instruments and was jailed on the charge.
Chong was arrested last Wednesday when customs officers at the airport found some immigration rubber stamp facings of various countries in his possession.
Forensic examination revealed that the five stamp dies of Indonesia, Vietnam and Canada were forgeries.
The man admitted that he had been asked by an African at Kuala Lumpur Airport to bring stamp dies, stamp pads, inks and date chops to Hong Kong for a money reward.
He originally planned to drop them into a litter bin at the airport on arrival.
Under Hong Kong's laws, possessing a false instrument is an offence and liable to a sentence of 14 years in jail.
