Pair trapped in pool after pipe bursts

A taxi driver and his passenger were trapped in a pool of water after an underground pipe ruptured near the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sha Tin yesterday.

The pipe burst on Sha Tin Wai Road shortly after 5am, forcing the Kowloon Motor Bus company to alter three of its routes.

Firefighters were called to the scene to rescue the driver, 50, and a passenger from a pool about one metre deep.

Repairmen from the Water Supplies Department arrived at the scene two hours after the burst to cut off the water supply. The Drainage Department also sent workers to the site.

'The cause of the burst pipe has yet to be identified. But traffic was not affected, as one of the lanes of the flooded road was open at about 10am,' said a spokesman for the Water Supplies Department.

A water truck was sent to the Prince of Wales Hospital to serve staff and patients of Li Ka Shing Specialist Clinic and the Sir Yue-kong Pao Centre for Cancer.

But a spokeswoman for the hospital said water supplies were normal at all buildings and services for patients were not affected.
