Web articles too good to keep out of exams

The cheating incident during a recent English exam has caused much controversy.

The main problem in this incident is that an article quoted in an exam paper was taken off the Web. To stop cheating of this kind happening again, people have suggested that information found on the Web should not be used in exams.

I don't think this is the way to go. The internet is a vast source of information and many of the articles and essays found on the Web are an excellent source of materials for exams. It would be a waste not to use them.

I suggest the examination authority continues to quote articles from the internet, but not include the source of the article to stop online cheats.

The episode is over and I think it would be more beneficial to think up solutions rather than just complaining about the authority.

Turn off the air conditioner

Recently, we had an assembly on the greenhouse effect. Our teacher, Mr Tam, told us about the greenhouse effect and said the global temperature was increasing. Because of this our school is planning a No Air-conditioning Day. It will be hard not to have the air-conditioning on during the summer but using the air conditioner contributes towards the planet's increasing temperature. I don't mind not using the air-conditioning as much if it will help conserve energy and protect our planet.

Wedding dreams

Finding a 'prince' and having a beautiful, memorable wedding is every girl's dream.

So what is a beautiful and memorable wedding? Many people would probably say it is one where the couple wear gorgeous clothes and are surrounded by lots of guests in a beautiful environment.

But I think a beautiful and memorable wedding can be very simple. It can be in a simple place and there don't have to be many people. Just inviting close family to a simple dinner can be enough.

A beautiful and memorable wedding doesn't need to be over the top. If you really love the person you're marrying then surely that is enough.

Hospital beds should not be abused

There have been recent reports that convalescent beds in public hospitals are being inappropriately used.

The reason for this is because some people want their relatives to stay in hospital because it is cheaper than sending them to an old-age home.

But this is costing the Hospital Authority millions of dollars.

I think the Hospital Authority has to take action. It can't force people to go home if they can't take care of themselves, but what it can do is charge them more if they insist on staying.

Phone cheats shock

I'd like to voice my views on the recent HKCEE cheating incident. I was really shocked when I heard the news. Although cheating is common, I've never heard of students cheating in such an important exam. This is not the right way to use technology.

I also don't agree with students' requests that questions with Web links provided be ignored. This is unfair to those candidates who did not cheat.

Whatever the solution is, the Examinations and Assessment Authority urgently needs to come up with something to make sure this does not happen again.

A real pain

I recently had a really bad toothache. It was so bad I couldn't sleep so I went to the dentist who gave me some painkillers.

These didn't work so I went to my doctor, who gave me more pills. I took them and I slept for three days. When I woke up the pain had gone and I was feeling much better.

This has really made me realise that health is the most important thing. Without a healthy body, we can't do anything.

Volunteering counts

There are a lot of non profit-making charity groups in Hong Kong and they are always organising charity activities to help relieve the financial problems of the elderly and the poor. These events are often manned by volunteers.

By volunteering, we can offer help to those who are in need, and it's also a great way to meet new friends and have some wonderful experiences we wouldn't have otherwise.

I think everyone should do volunteer work.
