nortel GSM-R puts china railways on track

China's Ministry of Railways has signed a deal with Nortel to supply Global System for Mobile Railway (GSM-R) switching centres for digital mobile signalling and operational communications along passenger lines spanning 20 provinces on the mainland. Seven GSM-R switching centres will be deployed, supplementing two other such devices installed last year. Stephen Tsui Shing-tat, chief operating officer at Nortel Greater China, said: 'An advanced communications network will help China power the rapid growth of its railway network and its migration to 200km/h to 300km/h fast trains.' Establishing secure and reliable wireless voice and data communications for train drivers, signalling personnel and other operational staff rank high on the ministry's agenda.

The Beijing site will focus on developing Teradata's data warehouse technology, used to enhance business decision-making and customer relationships. In Dalian, Teradata staff will implement data warehousing and business intelligence projects for customers throughout North Asia.

regulator banking on video-conferencing

The China Banking Regulatory Commission has established its own video-conferencing network to boost information sharing within the agency. The Beijing-based regulator deployed multiple units of the VSX 7000e group video-conferencing device, video bridges and related communications management software - all from conferencing gear maker Polycom. 'With the installation of a secure video-conferencing solution, the commission has clearly signalled the importance of strengthening on-demand information exchange to enhance its regulatory functions,' said Steven Li Gang, vice-president and general manager at Polycom Greater China. The commission protects the interests of bank depositors and consumers through public awareness of modern finance, testing qualified banking personnel and combating financial crime.
