We don't usually consider Hong Kong developers culturally or aesthetically minded, but tonight Henderson Land boss Lee Shau-kee (left) will be given this year's Montblanc de la Culture Arts Patronage Award. For being a 'strong supporter of the preservation, education and dissemination of art and culture', Mr Lee gets a fountain pen and the honour of donating Euro15,000 ($135,000) in his name to the charity of his choice - the Chung Ying Theatre Company - at a ceremony at the Four Seasons hotel. The jury of the Montblanc prize, which was started in 1992, this year includes conductor Edo de Waart and jewellery designer Lo Kai-yin. The judges said in the past 30 years, Mr Lee 'has helped to promote arts and culture through various initiatives, including donating significant sums' to various groups.

Now, if he really wants to improve Hong Kong culture, Mr Lee could build some nicer-looking residential tower blocks in Tseung Kwan O.
