Old and new

Full marks if you see in this unusual floral pattern (below right) references to the graceful white petals of orchids. Part of Rubelli's new collection, Orchidea ($1,045 a metre) is a printed cotton fabric inspired by early 20th-century decorative and oriental arts. The upscale Venetian fabric mill, set up in 1858, can be as hip as it is historic, however. Its Linea washable-cotton material (below; $842 a metre) - which boasts colourful raised lines that appear embroidered - is suitable for modern sofas and armchairs in interiors the company describes as 'young and easy'.
