Vacancy for factory manager in Guangdong

A global machinery industry company is looking for a manager to take charge of its factory in Guangdong producing premium magnetic materials.

'Our client has a customer satisfaction focus and [has] an engineering infrastructure built to support quality management systems,' said Dilys Lam, senior consultant, executive search and selection, for Gemini Personnel, the firm that is conducting the search.

The successful candidate will oversee more than 100 employees in a plant that was established in 1990 as a joint venture between a Hong Kong company and an American firm.

The manager will spend five days a week on the mainland and will be responsible for the plant's operations, including production, quality control, customer service and outsourcing.

The successful candidate will periodically communicate with the board of directors in Hong Kong and visit the partner company's headquarters in the US a few times a year. The manager may also have to tour the mainland to visit other factories.

Experience of a start-up will be an advantage.

'This role is not just of an operations manager for a machinery plant. The general manager's perspective should be towards business development rather than operations,' Ms Lam said

Applicants must include on their resumes previous experience and professional successes.

Customer-focused candidates who strive for quality while aiming to maximise productivity are encouraged to apply.

The manager will be required to build a strong management team and to retain those employees who perform well. Periodic evaluations of key staff by mentoring and training will be necessary.

Applicants should have at least eight years of relevant experience in a medium-sized assembly facility on the mainland that also uses machines for metal and plastic injection and moulding.

A mechanical engineering or related qualification, preferably with an MBA degree, is needed.

Ms Lam said the ideal candidate should also be able to accept constructive criticism.

The manager could eventually be promoted to the position of general manager for all plants in southern China.
