Wong works wonders with Bobo
The love affair continued yesterday for Bobo Win and apprentice jockey Terry Wong Chi-wai as the young rider passed the first milestone of his riding career.
Wong was previously allocated to John Moore, the trainer of Bobo Win, and began his association with the horse with a knockout 92-1 win in March last year.
Though Moore has also tried leading junior Alex Lai Hoi-wing on the horse, he has continued to call on Wong to ride the six-year-old even after the apprentice moved to Dennis Yip Chor-hong's stable.
'We have tried other apprentices on him and they have done nothing wrong but Bobo Win just seems to run especially well for Terry Wong,' said Moore. 'He just lets him roll along in front and do his thing and I think Bobo Win enjoys that.'
Wong has had just seven rides on the gelding for three wins and two seconds, so it was fitting that Bobo Win's victory in the Clear Water Bay Handicap (1,400m) yesterday became win number 20 for the claimer.
That is a significant mark, as Wong's claiming allowance will now be reduced from 10 pounds to seven when he rides next Sunday.
Moore said the season was not over for Bobo Win, but admitted the gelding's consistency had made his job tough these days.
'He was dropping back down from Class One today so he was back to the sort of company where he can win but in Class One they are a bit too strong for him,' Moore said.
'He still gets out and leads but he gets lost in those races for 110 ratings. After this win, he's back into Class One and he'll run in that 1,600m race on the last day of the season. He's got an iron constitution so the extra run won't hurt him but he does find that sort of company tough.'
