Crazy about surprises
By Joyce Siu
Watch out for wacky duo Gnarls Barkley's debut album St. Elsewhere as it's full of surprises.
The group is comprised of DJ/ producer Brian Burton aka Danger Mouse, and rapper/singer Thomas Callaway aka Cee-Lo. Burton co-produced the last Gorillaz album Demon Days, and Callaway was a member of hip-hop act Goodie Mob.
The two forces joined equals a musical mesh-up that stretches from hip-hop and soul to alt-rock and psychedelia.
The album's cornerstone is lead single Crazy, which topped the UK singles chart for nine weeks.
It's full of funky beats and bouncy melodies, topped with Callayway's soulful voice. Crazy is the disco anthem of the year so far.
Another great track is Just a Thought, where gospel meets drum and bass. It's beautifully crafted chaos that will hit you on a musical and emotional level.
Hip-hop number Feng Shui, which comes in at a short 1.27 minutes, shows off Callaway's rapping flair as he rhymes its off-the-wall lyrics over a soulful beat.
Although the album is about madness, depression and monsters, listening to it is pure audio joy.
