Party spirit in full flow
with Andrew Sun
There were competing booze parties on Friday as Chivas whisky and Hennessy VSOP cognac both tried to throw attention-grabbing events. The early advantage went to Chivas, which took over Lan Kwai Fong's California and invited pseudo-band Alive to knock back cocktails on a stage. More celebrity fodder was provided by model Ana Rivera popping out of a giant music box dressed as a ballerina.
In contrast, Hennessy forced the hip and happening to trek out to Kowloon near the old Kai Tak airport for a late bash at a large hangar in the Hong Kong Aviation Club. They also had their share of stars and models to be gawked at from behind a cordoned-off VIP area. The intended New York City vibe was a tough sell considering the surroundings consisted of Kowloon City.
A Hennessy rep explained the two parties had less to do with liquor-label rivalry than avoiding a clash later on with crucial World Cup games. 'This just seemed a good weekend before the elimination round started.'
