Mainland sports stars easily qualify for final stage
Mainland Olympic medallists such as diving stars Tian Liang and Guo Jingjing could, if they wished, waltz into the selection stage of Hong Kong's new migrant scheme.
The Immigration Department yesterday said such talented people would be granted full marks in the achievement-based points test, which should put them in a favourable position during the assessment for further consideration by a special panel appointed by the chief executive.
The assistant immigration director for visas and policies, Helen Chan Wing-mui, said: 'Even if they have retired, they still have won awards in the past and are successful. They could be coaches or teachers and contribute to society.'
The department's guidance notes say others in this category are Nobel laureates and winners of national or international awards.
But people in this category would not be automatically granted residency, as the panel considering applications would take further aspects into account.
