An electronic engineering undergraduate at City University (CityU) is among 10 students worldwide to receive scholarships from the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers Microwave Theory and Techniques Society (IEEE MTT-S) in the United States.

James Chen Xiaojun, a third-year student, won the award for his outstanding project 'A new technique that improves the efficiency of a linear power amplifier'.

The new technique will enhance battery performance in 3G mobile phones by more than five times without compromising signal transmission, Mr Chen said.

The IEEE MTT-S is a trans-national society that promotes the advancement of microwave theory and its application. Mr Chen is the only Hong Kong student to receive the scholarship this year.

Prior to joining CityU three years ago, he was studying at Shanghai Jiaotong University. He was named one of CityU's outstanding students in April.
